I'm a writer, a visual artist, a teacher, and a martial artist. My first book of poetry, THE CARRINGTON MONOLOGUES, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize; my first novel, MARIE, MARIE: HOLD ON TIGHT, was reviewed in the September 2005 issue of THE WRITER and received unanimously excellent reviews. I've been awarded the Dillman Creative Arts Resort Scholarship for Visual Arts; THE LEDGE Chapbook Competition Award in Poetry (for RAG MEN); the 2007 New Mexico Writer's Scholarship; the AWP Intro Award in Poetry; and a Yaddo residency fellowship in fiction, among more than forty national/international honors/awards/scholarships. I also hold the Ph.D., M.F.A., and M.A. in English/creative writing. My poetry and fiction have been published in more than 1,000 journals, including TRIQUARTERLY, THE LITERARY REVIEW, PUERTO DEL SOL, DENVER QUARTERLY, THE VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW, HAYDEN'S FERRY REVIEW, and THE BELOIT POETRY JOURNAL. As a martial artist, I study American Kenpo with the Morgans in Albuquerque and Chinese Kenpo with Tom Kao, also in Albuquerque; I solo train in Shorin Ryu.
